Two Car Crashes In 1987, a new type of crash reflecting real-world accidents was added to the test program: the car/car crash. To reach the high differential speeds of up to 90 km/h, the car acceleration facility had to be taken to its limits.
The passenger cells of the two 190 sedans (W 201) remained largely intact after this test at a differential speed of 70 km/h and with 50 % overlap. Note this model received only two stars in the IIHS offset crash test. Mercedes-Benz crash testing is more comprehensive. It includes dozens of different crash tests, to come closer to real world accident performance.
In this 230E (W124) E-Class car/car crash test, the effectiveness of the seatbelt-plus-airbag combination was confirmed: the airbag affords additional protection for head and chest in a severe frontal collision. For reasons of comparability, only one of the cars in this test was fitted with an airbag. A new tracking system for facility independant outdoor crash testing was used, which Daimler-Benz developped with DEKRA.
