Job 1, the first M-Class made in Vance
First M-Class
On Feb. 14, 1997, Mercedes worker David Carden of Hueytown drove
the "Job 1" M-Class off the assembly line in Vance. That M-Class
represented the first dealer-ready auto made in Alabama.

Additionally 77,008 M-Classes were built at Magna-Steyr in Graz,
Austria, also known as Daimler-Steyr-Puch between 1999 to 2002.
Mercedes-Benz USA Celebrates 10th Anniversary in Tuscaloosa
The first factory for Mercedes-Benz passenger cars outside of
Germany will be expanded for about $600 million to double the
workforce and production capacity for the Grand Sports
Tourer and M-Class successor model.

A total of 12,120 ML 55 AMG (W163.174) were built through December 2003.
Last M-Class
On Friday December 10, 2004 the last W163 M-Class rolled off the
line in Vance. 571,003 have been produced in Vance. 77,008 were produced in
Graz, bringing the total to 648,011. The last first generation M will
be exhibited in the museum in Vance.

Team MBUSI produced 173,600 vehicles in 2006 exceeding the
160,000 planned.
January 2007
One Millionth Alabama-Built Mercedes-Benz Rolls Off the Line
The milestone vehicle -- a white M-Class 350 -- came off the production
line on November 27, 2007 at 7:59 a.m. (Central Standard Time).
Overall in 2007 Mercedes built 174,356 vehicles in Vance, a new record.
