If you want to stay with Sprint/Nextel
There is a dedicated Sprint cradle solution for cars with MHI. You'll need to get these parts from your MB dealer: V60 MHI Cradle (BQ6820988) and V60x handset (BQ6820888). Although the handset is a bit old, it's E911 compatible so Sprint will activate it. You'll also get deeper integration and better performance than possible with any Bluetooth solution too. (If you plan on keeping two handsets, one to carry, one for dedicated car use, you can also save significant cash on your monthly Sprint/Nextel bill by placing the additional MB handset on a family plan with your current phone. The monthly savings will quickly help you recover the high price of the MB handset.)

Wired handset BT adapter for Europe: wired BT SAP UHI adapter
As expected a second Bluetooth adapter model will also be offered in Europe which includes a wired handset for privacy. It's Mercedes part number B6 787 5838, one below the US model. Like the first it plugs into the UHI connector installed in the car. And like the first it connects the phone using the Bluetooth SIM-access profile. And like the first the adapter also has a built-in SIM card reader and can thus also be used without a Bluetooth phone by inserting a SIM card into it. Lateron in December 2006 an updated version B6 787 6128 of the wired Bluetooth adapter also became available which stores the PIN, pairs four phones, and can use 3 phone numbers per phonebook entry and has otherwise the same functionality as the first generation model.

Upgrading Mercedes V60 Phone Systems
Mercedes offers an upgrade path for existing Mercedes V60 handsfree phone installations. Simply plugging the new V60 Bluetooth® adapter puck P/N B6 787 5856 into the installed V60 cradle updates it so some newer phones can be used. The adapter will become available in 30 to 60 days for '02 to '05 MLs. It should also work in '98 to '01 M-Classes or other Mercedes models with handsfree Mercedes V60 phone systems. The Q-Phone works with the puck including phonebook download.

2007 Accessories: Hands-Free Communication System MHI Bluetooth® Interface Module
"The Mercedes-Benz Hands-Free Communication System incorporates state-of-the-art communications technology with the engineering expertise of Mercedes-Benz. Unlike conventional cell phones, the Hands-Free Communication System is seamlessly integrated into your vehicle and engineered, tested, and approved by Mercedes-Benz to provide optimum reception and sound quality while helping keep your eyes on the road and your hands on the wheel. The Hands-Free Communication System is part of every Mercedes-Benz S-Class and optional on the ML, R and GL. And we offer two ways to take advantage of it based on your lifestyle:
MHI Interface Cradle
With the Multi-Handset Interface Cradle, your phone is stored securely out of the way, it's continually charged so you never have to worry about a depleted battery in the car, and it links to an external antenna to provide the best possible reception when placing or receiving a phone call.
B6 787 5843 MHI cradle for V330, V551, V557
B6 787 5844 MHI cradle for E815, V710; CDMA - Verizon
B6 787 5849 MHI cradle for Nokia 6230; GSM
MHI cradle for V60s
MHI BT cradle for L7 SLVR (Bluetooth and docking cradle)
B6 787 5869 MHI BT cradle for V3 RAZR (Bluetooth and docking cradle)
Bluetooth® Interface Module; BT HFP MHI
With Bluetooth® technology your phone connects wirelessly with the Hands-Free Communication System. Bluetooth® supports hands-free audio and limited call handling functions. Since the phone is not connected in a cradle, battery charging and use of an external antenna are not possible, but you can keep your phone on your belt, in your purse, wherever it's convenient. MBUSA is working on phone updates
including updates for older MB phones from 2001-2004, Bluetooth, a non-branded phone e.g. Nokia 6230 or two and MHI cradles. MBUSA will be getting out of the handset business. For details read Curt's letter. The BT V60 puck updates older V60 handsfree phone systems from 2002 to 2004. The MHI BT adapter is for 2005/2006+ models.

Rest of World: Two Bluetooth® SAP systems
UHI cradles supporting the Bluetooth SIM Access Profile (SAP) are planned for next year. At present UHI supports only the Bluetooth headset profile for privacy. Bluetooth SAP switches the phones' antenna off when inside the car using the external antenna instead. Three different phone solutions, an "adapter puck with BT® SAP", a "dongle with BT® SAP with wired handset" and a "passive wired handset" all plug into the standard UHI connector in the car (option 386).

Mercedes drops Nokia, uses Siemens CX65 in Europe
When ordering the phone with the factory installed handsfree system with external antenna for about € 900, Mercedes provides a Siemens CX65 incl. integrated camera starting late November 2004 instead of the previous Nokia 6310i since Nokia drops external antenna connectors. There should be no price change. Using the cars external antenna improves the phones range and connection quality and minimises the radiation inside the vehicle (electrosmog). Universal adapters for various Nokia and Ericsson phones are available as well.

is an alternative to the UHI and available for the W203, W210 and W209 outside of the US for € 100. It also uses the UHI cradles and the phone can be used with the multi-function steering wheel. It does not integrate with the radio but the phonebook is available in the instrument cluster (via a CAN-bus connection). Some part numbers for the installation kit are B6 787 5704, B6 787 5705 or B6787 5710 depending on model and factory prewiring. M-Class factory phone wiring
MLs are prewired with antenna coax cable leading from the antenna cutout in the center rear rooftop to the front, center console and center armrest. The coax (RG-58U in 1998/1999s) supports all frequencies. Note in European MLs as of 2001 the coax leads under the passenger seat and is not connected to the next coax leading to the radio cubicle. That's where the antenna switch and Tele Aid fit in on North American M-Classes. To get it to work, one must make the connection under the passenger seat.

Built-in Microphone
An overhead microphone near the trip computer is preinstalled. It's an AKG Acoustics flush-mount single electret condenser microphone model Q501. The wires were taped to the antenna coax behind the radio so that they were easy to find in my '99 ML320.
AKG Acoustics

The phone uses the stereo speakers as output.

98/99 Mercedes radios are muted when the phone is busy and then show "PHONE" in the display. Dialing and call control works from the phone controller installed in the empty cubicle right in the dash below the factory radio.
