Next Honda Accord to hit 60 MPG - report
Autocar reports a mileage of 62.8 MPG for the European Accord 2.2l CTDI as tested at the recent Diesel Technology Forum Tour in Sacramento, California. A similar performance of 59.46 MPG was achieved on the E320 CDI world record drive from Texas to Florida in 2005 (earlier mention). Both numbers are based on the larger UK Imperial gallon and highway driving. Honda's European specs are 5.5 liters per 100 kilometers, combined, in the NEDC, which converts to 43 MPG in US numbers, and is higher than for the Accord V6 hybrid, which will be replaced by the diesel. Honda plans to use an innovative combined particulate and nitrogen oxide converter producing ammonia to clean the exhaust. (tip Doug Hetrick)

Mercedes to show S-Class Bluetec study with 36 MPG
Auto Motor und Sport reports Mercedes will show a Bluetec S-Class concept at the IAA later this year with consumption lowered to 6.6 liters per 100 kilometers. To achieve this number the car will likely use a four cylinder diesel, suggesting the new OM651 with twin turbocharging and 204 hp. Automatic stop-start and brake energy regeneration contribute to the efficiency. Since four cylinder engines have not been used in the S-Class before series production is questionable and would start in late 2008 at the earliest. Emissions are said to already comply with Euro 6 limits which become effective in 2014. This S-Class Bluetec concept is similar to the S320 Bluetec Hybrid shown at the IAA in 2005 (earlier mention), and might also have been inspired by the "Auto 2000" research vehicle with biturbo V6 diesel which Mercedes showed 26 years ago at the IAA in 1981, and which burnt only 7.5 liters per 100 kilometers. It pioneered a light-alloy V6 diesel engine with two-stage turbocharging.

Bringing an out-of-state new Mercedes diesel to California
There are several ways according to the DMV. If the vehicle to be purchased has at least 7500 miles on the odometer it can be registered in California. A few other exceptions are when a vehicle is stolen when travelling outside of California, or is destroyed or made inoperative the replacement vehicle can then be registered, even if it is new with less than 7500 miles.

Biodiesel from green algae
UC Berkeley spinoff Aurora Biofuels is gearing up a biodiesel production method which is more efficient and less costly than conventional methods. Instead of growing soybeans or rapeseed the process utilizes algal biophotoreactors with genetically modified strains of Bacillariophyceae or Chlorophyceae. Several years ago, from 1978 to 1996 algae were researched in the DOE "Aquatic Species Program" to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from coal fired power plants. Since the algae showed high biodiesel content of over 50% after binding the CO2, the idea was borne to utilize them for biodiesel production. MIT spinoff GreenFuel Technologies develops and operates algae-based biofuel plants in partnership with power generation facilities.

Mercedes-Benz: "Diesel good for America"
DaimlerChrysler said that diesel must play a big part in solving the fuel crisis in the USA. "Diesel will be good for America, and biodiesel makes diesel better." He said that diesel engines provide 30% better fuel economy and 20% less CO2 emissions. He also pointed out that biodiesel would use 20% plant based fuel that had been grown in the USA, not imported from the Middle East. According to the American government's own figures, if diesel had a 33% share of cars and pick-ups, the U.S. would reduce its oil consumption by up to 1.4 million barrels of oil per day. That would mean it could stop importing oil from Saudi Arabia altogether. Reuters

EPA ready to set SCR diesel guidelines
According to a recent conference the EPA is ready to introduce guidelines for the AdBlue urea SCR system by October. Urea systems have several advantages: simplicity, because they can be used to meet emission limits in all markets, cost, since they cost about half as much ($880) as an NOx trap ($1400), and integration, since the system does not affect engine performance and can be installed without extensive modifications. The EPA is concerned what happens when AdBlue runs out and may require a warning system or a system which disallows refueling vehicles with low AdBlue tanks. DaimlerChrysler, Ford, GM and other automakers support AdBlue SCR.

MBUSA says: "Diesels before hybrids"
According to MBUSA's parting CEO Paul Halata MBUSA has no plans to introduce a P1/2 two mode hybrid within a year after GM and Dodge introduce them on their SUVs. Instead Mercedes will focus on Bluetec which debuts on the E320 Bluetec this fall, followed by the ML320 CDI and R320 CDI turbodiesels in October and the GL320 CDI in the first quarter of next year, as well as the Dodge Sprinter, Freightliner Sprinter and Jeep Grand Cherokee CRD. As early as 2008 and before stricter emission rules take effect in 2009 Bluetec with Adblue is planned. Bluetec with Adblue still needs to be EPA certified. Then the diesels can comply with Bin 5 and be offered in all 50 states. Of course this doesn't apply to the commercial Sprinter vans which are 50 state legal due to different emission rules for vehicles with a GVWR above 7500 lbs.

The new efficient ML320 CDI will have 215 hp (160 kW) and a whopping 398 lb.-ft. of torque. This translates to 540 Nm, which is more than the European ML320 CDI with 510 Nm. The new clean E320 BLUETEC will have 208 hp and 388 lb.-ft. exceeding the 201 hp and 369 lb.-ft. of the inline six predecessor. Ultra low sulfur diesel (ULSD) should become available before year end. Have a look at the new stickers on the pumps. In California low sulfur diesel (ECD-1) has already been available since 2002 at BP/Arco diesel stations. In a prototype Mercedes diesel tested by the EPA the E320 Bluetec engine emitted 0.05 +/- 0.01 g/mi NOx very close to the limit of 0.05 g/mi needed to qualify for Tier 2 Bin 5. According to MBUSA "the 2007 E320 Bluetec, ML320 CDI, and R320 CDI do not meet the emissions requirements of California, Maine, Massachusetts, New York, or Vermont and are not available in these states."

Honda, Cummins, BMW to join clean diesel bandwagon
Within three years Honda plans to introduce a clean 4 cylinder diesel in the US market meeting Tier 2 Bin 5. A V6 is also planned. Cummins has been working on 4.2 liter V6 and 5.6 liter V8 diesels with Bosch piezo electric injectors and they are planned for a truck and SUV with a GVWR of under 8500 lbs by the end of the decade. BMW plans to use AdBlue SCR which should take about two years so their diesels can be sold in all 50 states.

Demand for Diesels Jumped 31 Percent in 2005 and MBUSA talks about the new models
According to various reports 543,777 diesel vehicles were sold last year, an increase of 31% over the previous year and 80% more than in 2000. MBUSA explains the diesel's potential and the new models to be introduced later this year starting with the ML320 CDI and R320CDI and followed by the GL320 CDI early next year. At present there are already the Sprinter turbodiesel vans and E320 CDI sedans.

World's cleanest diesel E 320 BLUETEC to be introduced in the USA in fall 06
The system comprises a close coupled oxidising catalytic converter, followed by an advanced DeNOx catalytic converter, particulate filter and SCR catalytic converter. SCR with Adblue is planned in 2-3 years after it passes certification. "BLUETEC is the new blueprint for the cleanest diesels in the world," says Mercedes. "And while BLUETEC was developed by Mercedes-Benz, it won't be exclusive to Mercedes-Benz. Of course, we'll share this technology with the Chrysler Group." Two different Bluetec systems were introduced. In the E320 Bluetec an close coupled oxicat, advanced DeNOx catalytic converter and particulate filter are followed by selective catalytic reduction (SCR). For larger cars, premium automobiles like the S-Class, and trucks like the Vision GL320 Bluetec an oxicat and particulate filter are followed by AdBlue SCR.

E320 CDI (OM642) fuel economy tested: 49.5 miles per US gallon
After completing the high speed records in Laredo, the three E320 CDIs with 3.0 liter V6 turbodiesels OM642 DE30 LA were driven from Laredo to Tallahassee in Florida. Without stopping to refuel each of the unmodified CDI models covered a distance of 1039 miles (1672 km). Sport stewards supervised the test, sealed the 80 liter fuel tanks and verified the average consumption at the end of the trip. It was 4.75 liters per 100 kilometers which is 49.5 miles per US gallon or 59.46 miles per British Imperial gallon. The standard renewable particle filters were tested by the TUV lateron, and still worked well, even after accumulating all these miles in the speed world records and fuel economy runs.

Vision SLK 320 CDI Triturbo shown in Geneva
The SLK 320 CDI Triturbo is based on the new V6 OM642 diesel engine, which achieves new levels of performance thanks to a two-stage supercharging system. It consists of three turbochargers, of which two are located on the outside next to the cylinder banks while the larger third turbocharger is situated in the Vee of the cylinders. At low engine speeds and loads, air flows through all three turbochargers with the small turbochargers doing most of the work. When engine speed increases and the flow is continuous, the large turbocharger takes over supplying the greatest share of the charge pressure. At the upper end of the rev range at full load, only the large turbocharger is in operation. The three turbochargers give the Roadster exceptional performance which is reflected by its self-assured looks which it shares with the SLK 55 AMG: it takes the car just 5.3 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h while its maximum speed is deliberately limited to 250 km/h. Figures like these mean that the Vision SLK 320 CDI Triturbo occupies a special position, even among thoroughbred sports cars. This is particularly true with regard to its fuel consumption. Despite its breathtaking performance, the diesel Roadster makes do with a modest 7.5 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres, which translates to 31.4 miles per US gallon (NEDC combined fuel consumption). Bosch subsidiary Erphi explains the two-stage charging.

Recommended diesel fuel additive: Liqui Moly 1052
Some Mercedes-Benz diesel engine engineers recommend to add some two cycle oil to the diesel fuel, in case the engine runs a bit rough due to a batch or so of poor diesel fuel quality in remote areas. In this connection Liqui Moly 1052 is usually mentioned. It reportedly burns clean, better than the diesel fuel itself, and can also be used on diesel engines fitted with particulate filter.

Still NO firm M-class diesel schedule for North America. We've been waiting since April 2002.
Mercedes tried but has been unable to get approval due to strict emission rules. The new engines promise more success but not before 2006 or 2007, and should be 50 states legal using a serviceable filter. The OM 648 DE 32 LA in the W211 E320 CDI at present doesn't fit into the M-Class nor into the E-class 4matic.

Mercedes BlueTec to use Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR)
starting late 2006 for MY2007 to meet tough emission standards for passenger cars in North America. The aqueous AdBlue solution is supplied by a renewable canister which has to be changed with every oil change at 13,000 miles. This is a simpler version of the SCR used in commercial diesel fleets in Europe and more cost effective than an NOx trap due to a lower fuel consumption of between 2 to 5%. It's reliable since it can't be damaged as easily by sulfur in the diesel fuel as for example an NOx trap, which might not be effective for the mandated 150,000 miles. Ford and Chrysler are also looking at SCR. Nissan is first to introduce it to Japan. In 2005 Mercedes-Benz will deliver the first Actros with SCR, where the SCR catalyst is integrated with the muffler.

Many smaller European diesels to be discontinued after 2010
Many smaller diesel engines can not achieve the new tight EURO 5 emission limits which take effect in 2010 and have the same limits for gas and diesel engines. Cars like the VW Golf TDI will most likely have to be discontinued without expensive upgrades using soot particle filter and NOx catalyst, which may cost more than the engine itself and also penalise the fuel economy. "The diesel will not be abolished", predicts VW boss Bernd Pischetsrieder. "But it will only survive in large vehicles." Last year 40% of all new vehicles sold in Europe were diesels, up from only 10% in 1990.
