M-Class Accident: 99 ML320 vs 89 Corolla
While stopped in the slow lane at a red light on El Camino Real in Palo
Alto, California, a car crashed into the rear with about 35 MPH. The ML took it like a champ.
The '89 Corolla was badly damaged. It skidded on the wet road
and smashed into the ML. Don't know whether it had ABS or not.
Nobody was injured.
The Corolla a month later...
pierced battery leaking... corroding... I didn't
see an ABS controller.
The bumper crash compatibility didn't work since the Toyota's
front dove down when braked so its bumper was too low and dove under
the ML's.
From the 1998 M-Class sales broschure: "The M-Class goes beyond basic
light-truck safety requirements. It meets Mercedes-Benz standards.
It's also designed with "crash compatibility" with passenger cars in
mind. It's bumpers, for example, are designed to match the height of
car bumpers more closely."
