"Many shapes originate on the drawing board. Only a few from the heart"
"The new S-Class is Mozart", says Dieter Futschik, Mercedes-Benz
designer. "It is so light-footed and graceful."

GL: "Creating a Monster"
The GL's designers were aiming for a look that is both powerful and
appealing. "There should be a mix of elegance and strength from this
concept," Futschik said. "Long horizontal lines stretch the whole body,
making it very sleek. It seems to be a little bit lower and creates
enough tension so it does not look static. It appears to be storing
some energy, which is exactly what this car should look like." The
hood and the grill work, which have an edgy look, were meant to give
the GL its own style. "You can understand instantly that this is
not an M-Class," he said. Inside, the design goal was to make it,
well, a Mercedes. "How we would define a Mercedes interior, you
should close the door and you should feel at home. You should be
in a good mood," Futschik said. "You should be able to touch the
surfaces and think, 'Ah, this is mine. This is very nice.' Soft,
precise and worthy and precious." For the designers, there were
lots of little details that had to be handled: The stitching on
the seats, the walnut and stainless steel finishes, the placement
of knobs, buttons and controls. "You may be in love with the form,
but your frustration would come from interacting with the controls
or something small," Futschik said. "It's important we have people
look at all of the design areas, big and small."
